No Jelly Bean Update for 2011 xperia mobiles

Last week Sony Mobile seemed to confirm on a Facebook Q&A chat that its 2011 Xperia handsets would not be upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Despite some fairly specific guidance on the matter, the Sony Mobile Product Blog is now back-tracking, saying that this information was given “in error” by “a local spokeserson”.
Sony hasn’t gone as far as confirming Jelly Bean for 2011 Sony Xperia handsets but it does say that they are “actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices”. Note the ‘all’ in that sentence. Given the clarification we would imagine that the Jelly Bean update may be planned for at least a few handsets, otherwise why would Sony build up hopes just to dash them again?
Interestingly, the post also talking about bringing further news on the ICS rollout for the Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones “over the next couple of weeks”. As the Xperia P has been explicitly mentioned here, this most likely points to an ICS release for the handset in the middle of August.
Here is the statement in full:
“During a Q&A session last week on our Sony Mobile GB Facebook page, a local spokesperson gave information out in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones.
We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.
As always, feel free to drop a question below and keep your eyes fixed on the blog, as we’ll be bringing you more on our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones over the next couple of weeks.”

A Complete Guide about DirectX

Ever wondered just what that enigmatic name means?

Gaming and multimedia applications are some of the most satisfying programs you can get for your PC, but getting them to run properly isn’t always as easy as it could be. First, the PC architecture was never designed as a gaming platform. Second, the wide-ranging nature of the PC means that one person’s machine can be different from another. While games consoles all contain the same hardware, PCs don’t: the massive range of difference can make gaming a headache.

To alleviate as much of the pain as possible, Microsoft needed to introduce a common standard which all games and multimedia applications could follow – a common interface between the OS and whatever hardware is installed in the PC, if you like. This common interface is DirectX, something which can be the source of much confusion.

DirectX is an interface designed to make certain programming tasks much easier, for both the game developer and the rest of us who just want to sit down and play the latest blockbuster. Before we can explain what DirectX is and how it works though, we need a little history lesson.

 DirectX history

Any game needs to perform certain tasks again and again. It needs to watch for your input from mouse, joystick or keyboard, and it needs to be able to display screen images and play sounds or music. That’s pretty much any game at the most simplistic level.

Imagine how incredibly complex this was for programmers developing on the early pre-Windows PC architecture, then. Each programmer needed to develop their own way of reading the keyboard or detecting whether a joystick was even attached, let alone being used to play the game. Specific routines were needed even to display the simplest of images on the screen or play a simple sound.

Essentially, the game programmers were talking directly to your PC’s hardware at a fundamental level. When Microsoft introduced Windows, it was imperative for the stability and success of the PC platform that things were made easier for both the developer and the player. After all, who would bother writing games for a machine when they had to reinvent the wheel every time they began work on a new game? Microsoft’s idea was simple: stop programmers talking directly to the hardware, and build a common toolkit which they could use instead. DirectX was born.

How it works..??

At the most basic level, DirectX is an interface between the hardware in your PC and Windows itself, part of the Windows API or Application Programming Interface. Let’s look at a practical example. When a game developer wants to play a sound file, it’s simply a case of using the correct library function. When the game runs, this calls the DirectX API, which in turn plays the sound file. The developer doesn’t need to know what type of sound card he’s dealing with, what it’s capable of, or how to talk to it. Microsoft has provided DirectX, and the sound card manufacturer has provided a DirectX-capable driver. He asks for the sound to be played, and it is – whichever machine it runs on.

From our point of view as gamers, DirectX also makes things incredibly easy – at least in theory. You install a new sound card in place of your old one, and it comes with a DirectX driver. Next time you play your favourite game you can still hear sounds and music, and you haven’t had to make any complex configuration changes.

Originally, DirectX began life as a simple toolkit: early hardware was limited and only the most basic graphical functions were required. As hardware and software has evolved in complexity, so has DirectX. It’s now much more than a graphical toolkit, and the term has come to encompass a massive selection of routines which deal with all sorts of hardware communication. For example, the DirectInput routines can deal with all sorts of input devices, from simple two-button mice to complex flight joysticks. Other parts include DirectSound for audio devices and DirectPlay provides a toolkit for online or multiplayer gaming.

Diagnosing problems

Diagnosing problems with a DirectX installation can be problematic, especially if you don’t know which one of the many components is causing your newly purchased game to fall over. Thankfully, Microsoft provides a useful utility called the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, although this isn’t made obvious. You won’t find this tool in the Start Menu with any version of Windows, and each tends to install it in a different place.

The easiest way to use it is to open the Start Menu’s Run dialog, type in dxdiag and then click OK. When the application first loads, it takes a few seconds to interrogate your DirectX installation and find any problems. First, the DirectX Files tab displays version information on each one of the files your installation uses. The Notes section at the bottom is worth checking, as missing or corrupted files will be flagged here.

The tabs marked Display, Sound, Music, Input and Network all relate to specific areas of DirectX, and all but the Input tab provide tools to test the correct functioning on your hardware. Finally, the More Help tab provides a useful way to start the DirectX Troubleshooter, Microsoft’s simple linear problem solving tool for many common DirectX issues.

Software patch to avoid Galaxy Nexus ban coming soon

Within hours of a federal judge denying Samsung's request to delay a ban on US sales of its Galaxy Nexus phone rooted in a patent tussle with Apple, Google says it is already working on pushing out a patch to address the issue.

The company behind the software on the Android OS reference device told All Things D that the software patch is meant to avoid infringing on an Apple patent for universal search, which District Court Judge Lucy Koh ruled on Friday was a valid reason to halt sales of the favored Ice Cream Sandwich and now Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-compatible phone in the US.

The patch is looked upon as only a temporary solution to the patent issue by Samsung and Google--the Korean phone maker plans to continue to appeal the ban, which can go into effect legally as soon as Apple posts a US$96 million bond. Google says it will support Samsung in that effort.

Meanwhile, sales of the Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store appear to have been halted, with the phone's availability status changed to "Coming Soon."
So for now it appears to be a race to see which will be in place first--the patch or the cash, with the future of American Galaxy Nexus sales hanging in the balance, and on the 4th of July, no less. The humanity!

One thing we've all learned from this latest development--if you ever felt scorned while waiting what seems like an interminable amount of days for an update to your phone, the feeling is apparently justified now that we've witnessed the breathtaking speed at which Google is working to push out this patch to satiate the legal system.

iPhone Users Are About to Be Screwed Over

There has been a lot of talk about the addition of an NFC (near field communication) chip to the next-gen iPhone. This will allow the phone to be used as a swipe-it-yourself credit card. I consider this technology to be the most onerous ever.

I first discussed the idea of your mobile phone becoming your credit card in the mid-1990s and was just biding my time before it came to pass. Bluetooth was invented in 1994 and gave rise to a lot of speculation regarding its usefulness. For a few years, all sorts of futuristic uses were imagined and a serious discussion of the so-called PAN (personal area network) began, but never went anywhere.
The PAN, spurred on by Bluetooth, would allow you to walk down the street and be told about sales, bargains, events and other nonsense from nearby stores and museums. You'd walk into Walmart and your name would be displayed a computerized sign to greet you as an old man pointed at the sign and then pointed at you in some creepy manner.

When you checked out, the Bluetooth device would take care of the payment accounting, and you'd never use cash again. This process could easily be mobile phone centric.
Over the years, through what I consider incompetent marketing, Bluetooth was relegated for use as a wireless earpiece technology and not much else. The PAN was dead as a doornail and my take on the phone as a credit card fell by the wayside. For the moment.

But good ideas can't be killed. But this "good idea" isn't about the convenience of paying with a phone swipe, but the idea of running your tab through the phone company. If you think your banker is a gouger with dubious fees and no-leeway, what do you think the phone company will be like? Yes, let AT&T handle all your money for you, and see how that works out in the end.

I'm immediately reminded of the online scams that took place during the modem era of communications. You'd be given a number to call, and it would actually be some sort of scam. The local number would connect to a BBS of some sort which would send a code back to the modem to turn off the speaker, so you couldn't hear the modem disconnect and then redial a number in Bulgaria or some obscure island. You'd then be connected to a phone service that charged $100/minute for the connection. After racking up thousands and thousand of dollars in phone costs, you'd get the bill from your phone company for $30,000.

You'd bitterly complain about the bill—these stories were all over the news during this era—but the phone companies said they couldn't do anything about the charges. The rates were protected by some U.S. treaty scammed together by the phone companies and signed into law. There was nothing they could do! So, you had to pay or lose your phone service and be sued in court.
This was unbelievable.

I've always been convinced this was test marketing to show the banks and everyone that the phone companies were the best collection agencies and should be in charge of your credit card and other transactions. After all, you can stall the bank, and what can they really do, anyway? You stall the phone company and you are disconnected from the world.

Do not let AT&T or Verizon or any phone company anywhere near your day-to-day financial transaction business!

You've been warned.

LG Quick Voice - a new analog Siri

Subject of virtual personal assistants in the style of Siri today is not lack of interest among both users and developers of. After all, quality programs of this kind is very small, and demand is very high.

Just recently, Wall Street Journal published an article which reported that Google plans to accelerate the development of a virtual assistant, a similar solution from Apple. However, manufacturers Android-devices at the same time, in a hurry to release their own solution. So after Samsung, submitting S Voice Services on the basis of a new flagship Galaxy S III, Siri prepared its response to the company LG.

Introduced a few days ago, a virtual assistant named Quick Voice, go to all the smart phones LG Optimus in South Korea through the standard update in a month. Plans for the South Korean manufacturer on the global release of the service is not yet known and will depend on the success of the test at home.

LG Quick Voice is based on the same principles as that of competitive solutions, but in functional terms Quick Voice is closer to Siri, than to the S Voice, the new software features allow you to run applications, send text messages, make calls, set the alarm and reminders, to work with the search browser, etc.

Android Jelly Bean - First screenshots

We know almost nothing about the next version of Android 4.1 (preliminary version) Jelly Bean. There have been many rumors and predictions about what might change in terms of features, but when it comes to possible changes in the user interface, Jelly Bean, is that virtually nothing has changed since the Android ICS . Well, today at the conference Google I / O, we may obtain the first information that will be in the new version. There have been some deviations from the style of Holo is adhered to the entire interface ICS, but the Google Search Bar to remain transparent, rectangular in shape and maintains a minimalist look.

5 Hidden dangers of Facebook

Over the last few years, Facebook's growth has been phenomenal. The world's no. 1 social networking site also sometime back beat Google to become the most visited Web site in the US for an entire week at a stretch. However, the site has also lately being receiving lot of flak for its privacy policies.

An expert in online privacy drew attention to the five dangers of sharing information on social networking site Facebook. Joan Goodchild, senior editor of CSO (Chief Security Officer) Online, said that marketing efforts by the company often results in a compromise on account holders' privacy.

Goodchild noted five risks of using Facebook. They are:

Risk 1: Your information is being shared with third parties

According to Facebook policy last updated on April 2010, "When you connect with an application or website it will have access to General Information about you. The term General Information includes your and your friends' names, profile pictures, gender, user IDs, connections, and any content shared using the Everyone privacy setting. ... The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to "everyone." ... Because it takes two to connect, your privacy settings only control who can see the connection on your profile page. If you are uncomfortable with the connection being publicly available, you should consider removing (or not making) the connection."

Risk 2: Privacy settings revert to a less safe default mode after each redesign

In March, private e-mail according to a Gawker report, private email addresses that many Facebook users wanted to keep hidden were revealed publicly on a multitude of Facebook profiles. The glitch was later resolved by Facebook.

Risk 3: Facebook ads may contain malware

Recently, a Facebook event invitation was reportedly sent to some over 2,300 friends of Jim Breyer, Accel Partners venture capitalist who sits on Facebook's board of directors, asking "Would you like a Facebook phone number?" However, the message was actually a scam and the users who entered their passwords in response to the message in turn sent the whole thing to their friends lists too.

"This was a phishing scam and Jim's account appears to have been compromised," read a statement from Facebook as provided to venture industry news site PEHub.

Risk 4: Your friends unknowingly make you vulnerable

On May 6th, the popular social network patched a major security bug that allowed users to snoop on their friends' private chats, and view their pending friend requests. The exploit forced Facebook to temporarily disable chat.

Risk 5: Scammers are create fake profiles

Earlier this week, 15 privacy and consumer protection organizations filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, alleging that the site manipulates privacy settings to make users' personal information available for commercial use.

Billionaire college dropouts

Once Bill Gates talked about how Mark Zuckerberg and he have a few things in common. "We both dropped out of Harvard.", Mr. Gates said. "I actually even gave a lecture at Harvard that said, if you have a great idea, don't worry about dropping out and he attended that lecture. So it is a funny connection there."Here's a look at 8 very successful dropouts.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified price revealed as $49.99

The price for Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, an exclusive PS Vita title, has been revealed by Amazon and Walmart on their sites. The game is being offered at a listing price of $ 49.99. This is the highest price ever for a Vita game, along with Uncharted: Golden Abyss. But considering the high price of the Call of Duty games, it's not a surprising announcement. As expected, Activision has been revealed as the publisher of the game, but the developer is yet to be confirmed.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified was unveiled at this year's E3 with no specifics on pricing or any other details until now.

The item description reads, "Before the future could be won, history had to be written." The rest of the description states that this edition of the game will explore the "original history" of the Black Ops Universe. This could suggest a possible tie-up with the yet to be released Black Ops 2 storyline, thereby adding fuel to the growing anticipation of its launch.

It also states the existence of a Special Ops mission along with a multiplayer version "tailored" for the Vita. This could indicate a Vita-specific multiplayer platform and no cross-platform playing possibility.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified is being slated for a release on December 31, 2012. Whether the given date is accurate or a rough timeline is yet to be seen.
