Q3 2012: Samsung shipped 57.1 million smartphones, operation profit ramps up to $7.3 billion.

Q3 2012: Samsung shipped 57.1 million smartphones, operation profit ramps up to $7.3 billion.

Samsung Electronics said Friday that it posted record operating profit of 8.1 trillion won ($7.3 billion) in the third quarter of this year on the back of robust smartphones sales. It is the fourth straight quarter of record operating profit.

The preliminary estimate for the July-September period is a 90.6 percent rise from 4.3 trillion won a year earlier and a 20.5 percent gain from the previous quarter, the company said in a regulatory filing. It is the first time a Korean company has exceeded 8 trillion won in quarterly operating profit.

In the filing to the Korea Exchange (KRX), the electronics giant also said it recorded record sales of 52 trillion won during the three-month period, up 26 percent from a year ago.

``For the first nine months of this year, Samsung has reaped 144.87 trillion won in revenue, while the combined operating profit reached 20.67 trillion won. It’s possible for Samsung to clinch 200 trillion won in revenue and 25 trillion won in operating profit for the entire year,’’ said a company spokesman.

The firm plans to announce the breakdown of its quarterly performance by business division later this month.

Samsung officials say smartphone sales have been good, while its consumer electronics and display-panel divisions also helped improve quarterly earnings and revenue.

“Our smartphone business was very impressive in the third quarter. We expect the phone-making division took up 68 percent by reporting at least 5.5 trillion out of the 8.1 trillion won quarterly operating profit,’’ said the official.

Samsung shipped 57.1 million smartphones in the third quarter, said leading local brokerage Daishin Securities. That will surpass the 50.5 million the firm shipped the previous quarter, a new high for a single vendor.

Sales of the Galaxy S3 surpassed 20 million in the 100 days after its May debut, the firm said on Sept. 6. The company is also marketing the Galaxy Note 2, equipped with a stylus and a larger screen than the S3, after the first version sold more than 10 million.

But the official stressed the firm’s other businesses have improved or at least secured their bottom line despite the debt-crisis in Europe and a slowdown in consumer spending in the United States and China.

``This is a good sign for Samsung as its rivalry with Apple is expected to heat up in the fourth quarter after the release of Apple’s new iPhone,’’ said the official.

Samsung’s consumer electronics unit, which mainly handles its television business, reported some 700 billion won in operating profit in the last quarter thanks to the rising popularity of high-end TVs in Samsung’s strategic business markets of Europe, North America and China.

Samsung’s semiconductor division, which is a traditional cash cow, is seen to create some 1 trillion won operating profit during the July-September period helped by an increased shipment of mobile application processors for use in smartphones and tablets and flash-type memory chips.

But executives admit they are nervous about the company’s dependency on the booming smartphone business.

The profit contribution from its phone-making business was between 20 and 30 percent before smartphones came out. But it was 73 percent in the first quarter of this year, according to Samsung.

``This is a new challenge for us. We are asked to find the next smartphone to diversify our business portfolio and lower the heavy dependency on that business,’’ said a Samsung executive by telephone.

According to a recent study by market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA), the demand for smartphones priced over $300 will lower to 30 percent next year from this year’s estimated 39 percent, meaning Samsung will suffer from a possible decline in average selling price (ASP) _ a barometer to gauge profitability.

Samsung and Apple are dominating global demand for smartphones. But the rapid rise of China’s budget smartphone manufacturers including ZTE are posing another threat to Samsung and urging its top decision makers to develop other businesses for corporate sustainability.

``I can say today’s smartphone boom is just like a carbonated drink. I mean smartphones don’t need huge investment, unlike memory chips, and could be a short passing phase,’’ said another Samsung official.

Apple offered to sign a cross-licensing deal over patents, Samsung said it is unacceptable.

Apple offered to sign a cross-licensing deal over patents, Samsung said it is unacceptable.

Apple has proposed a cross-licensing contract to Samsung Electronics, an official said Thursday.

``Apple offered to sign a cross-licensing deal over patents; but its requests were unacceptable,’’ the senior Samsung official said.

Apple’s intellectual-property licensing director Boris Teskler, had outlined a deal to his counterpart at Samsung _ Kim Seong-woo _ in a three-page letter that was revealed this week after U.S. Judge Lucy H. Koh rejected the firms’ request to keep the documents sealed.

``Apple is willing to license its declared-essential patents to Samsung on license terms that rely on the price of baseband chips on a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) royalties basis. Apple estimates that this approach, which implements the true meaning of and requirements imposed by FRAND, will result in a $0.33 per unit in royalties for Apple patents,’’ Apple said in a letter to Judge Koh.

``I don’t doubt that Apple would have liked Samsung to accept its offer and Apple’s proposed per-unit amount may seem low,’’ Florian Mueller, a German-based patent expert, wrote on his popular FossPatents blog.

``By submitting the classified letters to Judge Koh, Apple was intending to appeal to the presiding judge that its attempts to sign a peace treaty with Samsung vaporized due to Samsung’s unwillingness to accept the offer,’’ said another Samsung official.

Amid the deepening legal feud, the Korean firm has been raising its brand awareness in the global market. According to a study by InterBrand, a major consultancy in branding, Samsung’s brand value was estimated at $32.9 billion, ranking it ninth in terms of corporate awareness worldwide.

``For Samsung has nothing to lose in its fight with Apple,’’ a source said. Last year, Samsung’s brand awareness was 17th.

``Samsung’s anti-Apple campaign is so far paying off. It is now the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer and is rolling out more software- and hardware-improved devices as the fight is a good excuse to further encourage designers and technicians,’’ said the source.

Meanwhile, Samsung has officially asked that the ruling in August against it that awarded Apple $1.05 billion be thrown out as jury foreman Velvin Hogan failed to disclose his previous ``legal problems’’ with a company that Samsung has a close partnership with.

According to Samsung, the controversial foreman didn’t tell Judge Koh that he had filed bankruptcy in 1993 and had been sued by his former employer, Seagate Technology.

HP Earns Excellence in Service Operations Certification for Fifth Consecutive Year.

For the fifth consecutive year, HP has earned the Excellence in Service Operations certification from the Technology Services Industry Association (TSIA) for delivering superior technical support and services in North America.

The certification specifically recognizes HP’s customer support for its commercial PCs and peripheral services. For each of the past five years, HP Printing and Personal Systems (HP PPS, formerly HP Personal Systems Group)—Commercial North America has been the only manufacturer of laptops, desktops and workstations to be TSIA Excellence in Service Operations certified.

“HP’s North American Commercial PPS team has maintained its Excellence in Service Operations certification for five years, thereby successfully keeping pace with the technology industry’s high standards and expectations for support,” said Thomas W. Pridham, senior vice president and general manager, Organizational Development Services, TSIA. “The Excellence in Service Operations certification is a key indicator that an organization is committed and positioned to deliver the highest-quality service to its customers.”

This coveted third-party industry recognition includes a comprehensive evaluation of customer-centric service operations through all touch points, including phone, field service and web. For HP to successfully attain certification, auditors from TSIA compared HP support operations against nearly 245 industry best practices, including executive commitment, talent management, support tools and technology, and operation metrics—plus such core components as strategy, marketing, assisted and unassisted support, and field service.

“This year’s TSIA certification is a milestone for HP, marking five years of hard work toward customer service excellence,” said Jodi Schilling, vice president, Customer Support and Services, HP. “The recognition that we can always do better for our customers drives us to innovate and excel in the customer service business. We are committed to delivering an exceptional support experience to every customer, every day.”

As part of the certification process, TSIA auditors also reviewed HP management policies and procedures. This included on-site and remote audit processes conducted by a panel of service executives, each with more than 20 years of experience in the industry. Service and support are chief among both commercial and consumer needs during the technology-purchase process. TSIA’s certification underscores HP’s ongoing commitment to delivering the best customer experience possible.

Chinese Super computer helps to create a DreamWorks animated film.

Chinese Super computer helps to create a DreamWorks animated film.

Two staff members collect data in a computer room containing Tianhe-1A, China's fastest supercomputer, in Tianjin, on Aug 28, 2012.

If a Chinese supercomputer pops up in the credits at the end of a Hollywood film, don't be surprised, for China's Tianhe-1A, one of the world fastest supercomputers, is being used by a company in Tianjin to help create an animated film for DreamWorks.

"With the supercomputer's help, we've improved the rendering capability of DreamWorks," said Hu Yong, chairman of Cool Cartoon in Tianjin.

Hu said his company is now developing a data transmission system that will allow it to send rendered animations to its clients in North America faster in the future.

Tianhe-1A was developed to boost China's economic development and improve its scientific research capabilities, said Meng Xiangfei, head of the application department with the National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin, where Tianhe-1A is installed.

With the support of Tianhe-1A, a Chinese geographic information provider started the country's first official 3D map Tianditu - a Chinese version of Google Earth - which required an enormous number of calculations and data storage to create.

Compared with traditional two-dimensional maps, three-dimensional maps are more true to life, which offers users a more direct understanding of a real location, said Wang Jian, whose company provides a 3D map Tianditu of Tianjin.

"For example, if a house located in a block with interlaced streets catches fire, it is easier for firefighters to pinpoint the house's location and determine the quickest route to the fire using a 3D map."

In this way, the map not only makes firefighters' jobs easier, it can also help save people's lives, Wang added.

Wang said his team is now busy developing software to run on supercomputers that will improve the quality of the 3D map.

"The 3D map is really useful to me, because I find it difficult to relate ordinary maps to real streets. But the 3D map makes it easy," said Li Jing, who previously avoided driving in unfamiliar streets as she found it difficult to follow maps.

"I always thought the supercomputer was doing high-end scientific research. I never dreamed it would be part of my daily life," she added.

Thanks to its high performance, Tianhe-1A has also been boosting China's independent research and development capability in various industries and bringing more benefits to Chinese enterprises.

With Tianhe-1A's help, BGP, a geophysical service company affiliated to China National Petroleum Corp, China's largest oil and gas supplier, managed to eliminate China's dependency on overseas oil exploration technology.

"We now run independently developed software, which we used to have to buy from foreign companies, in Tianhe-1A to simulate underground geology," said Wu Wei, a manager from BGP.

"Using Tianhe-1A, we can conduct the simulation over a wider area and to a greater depth, which makes the exploration more accurate", he said, adding that the greater accuracy has increased the company's efficiency and saved it money.

"If we dig an oil well in the wrong place on land, we will lose tens of millions of yuan, and digging a well in the wrong place at sea can waste hundreds of millions of yuan," Wu said.

Like BGP, Tianjin Motor Dies Co Ltd will also save money, at least 3 percent of its production costs, thanks to Tianhe-1A's simulations.

"It's a large saving," said Chen Huibin, one of the company's experts in computer-aided engineering, "because our profit margins are only about 20 percent".

Meanwhile, the supercomputer is giving the company, which designs and manufactures car body panels and large stamping parts, a greater competitive edge.

After employing Tianhe-1A to simulate its stamping process, the company expects to increase its market share and "make the transition from offering low-end to high-end products", explained Chen.

Individuals can also use the supercomputer, according to Meng.

The level of supercomputer development in a country indicates its scientific research capabilities, so China's unexpected progress in developing supercomputers, Tianhe-1A beat supercomputers from the United States to be the world's fastest in 2010, caused an outbreak of anxiety in the US, which had long been the undisputed leader in supercomputers.

The US government responded by attaching more importance to the development of supercomputers, and the country reclaimed the world supercomputer crown in June this year using the Sequoia from the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

The latest US supercomputer will be used to carry out simulations to help extend the durability of the US' aging nuclear weapons, avoiding the need for real-world underground tests.

Although Tianhe-1A had dropped to fifth place in the list of the world's fastest supercomputers published in June, it is still one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. However, related services, including software and data transmission systems, need to be further developed and improved in order to make the most of its formidable computing power.

LG Google Nexus quad-core 2GB RAM coming in November.

LG Google Nexus quad-core 2GB RAM coming in November.

LG’s Nexus: quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 1280×768  resolution display, on-screen soft keys, 8-megapixel camera, 8GB and 16GB internal storage models (no microSD card slot), non-removable battery and wireless charging.

In addition to the purported spec leak, MoDaCo says that it’s also possible that other manufacturers might be building Nexus smartphones as well. That jibes well with news that Google could split its Nexus smartphones among numerous handset makers. LG’s Nexus smartphone will reportedly be released in mid-November.
